Information Security Vs Cyber Security: Know the Differences!

It is common to confuse these two areas as they come from the same origin, but their function and requirements differ entirely. They each have their own identity, and their functions and implementations never collide.  Information security and cyber security are closely related terms, and they are often used interchangeably. However, they have distinct focuses and scopes. Here are the key differences between information security and cyber security:

  1. Scope:

    • Information Security: Information security is a broader term that encompasses the protection of all forms of information, including both digital and physical data. It includes measures to safeguard information in various forms, such as paper documents, digital files, and even verbal communications.

    • Cyber Security: Cyber security is a subset of information security that specifically deals with protecting digital information and systems from cyber threats. It focuses on safeguarding computers, networks, servers, and digital data from attacks, breaches, and unauthorized access.

  2. Nature of Threats:

    • Information Security: Information security addresses a wide range of threats, including physical threats like theft or destruction of paper documents, as well as digital threats. It encompasses both internal and external threats to information.

    • Cyber Security: Cyber security primarily deals with digital threats, such as malware, phishing attacks, hacking, and other cyberattacks that target computer systems, networks, and data stored electronically.

  3. Components:

    • Information Security: Information security includes physical security measures (e.g., locked file cabinets, access control to physical premises) in addition to digital security controls.

    • Cyber Security: Cyber security is predominantly concerned with digital security controls, such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems, encryption, and antivirus software.

  4. Focus:

    • Information Security: Information security focuses on the protection of all types of information, whether it's in digital or physical form. It also includes considerations related to data privacy and compliance with regulations.
